Last night after dinner they had an "All hands" (
meaning the whole ship) ice cream social on the mess deck. They had put large
party-size (really big, like Leatherbys) ice cream buckets they had kept in the
morgue and they brought them out with sundae
toppings to have a whole ship ice cream ash. The ship's jazz band played
and they are awesome. They played for about 1 hour without any sheet music. Got a
video of it and the crowd there. They then did a weekly update slide show of
some of the videos you guys see online. It was pretty fun.
I copied 2 of the girls' pictures that went and spent 5 days on a jungle island on a medcap. Just copied the ones I wanted because the iPad is getting full. May have to delete my pictures off the iPad and just keep them on my memory cards. Finally got to shower at 11:00 pm and then to bed. Had people getting up at 3:30 banging doors and what not so I am a bit tired.
After breakfast I went up to the flight deck with Jenni and took pictures of the island of Siau. This is the last time we will come to this island and it is the one with the active volcano we can see. I took a movie and a panoramic picture. It just has steam coming out of one of the top peaks. They said at night you can see parts of the side of the mountain glowing. I took a picture of the info board they have about its history.
I did the OR again today. I pretty much was on my own. HM1 Bollinger came and helped me drive the C arm and consuls over to the room, got it plugged in and said I was on my own, the ortho guy is Dr. Torlondo and he had a female ortho resident assisting him. Another fractured tibia that they put a large pin down the middle. I was in there for about 5 hours. Jen gave me a 1/2 hr break for lunch. By the time I got finished and put the machine away and got down to the first sacrament meeting they had just finished passing the sacrament, so I will go back to the short 8 pm meeting. Jen and Madison were the speakers. As I was walking down to the first meeting I was so excited about the opportunity to go to it. The thought came to me, how many times we just walk across the street and it is not really any effort to get there because it is so close. Made me appreciate really the purpose of going to meetings and the blessing we have from having it so easy. Madison spoke on the atonement and how the Savior and how he is able to heal anything in our lives, physical or spiritual. He did part of his talk in English then do it in Indonesian, since we had about 7 local church members on the ship as patients or escorts. Jen talked about having hope and always hoping and moving toward hope not despair. She played a song by a group The Canadian Tenors call "You are always there." (we need to get their cd) it talks a out knowing that someone is always there for you and how we can hope in our Savior and know we can do anything if we truly want to. She mentioned there was somewhere she heard the saying your have to take a few steps into the dark before we step into the light. To have hope that everything will be OK and work out.
After the meeting Danielle Taysom, Jen and I and the ship's chaplains went down to the pediatric ward to sing some songs. I took my iPad and we played the children's song book actions songs. We did "Do as I'm doing", "If you're happy and your know it" (which they all knew and were singing in Indonesian), and "Head, shoulders, knees and toes", (which they do the head and ears, eyes, nose and mouth and it it is to a different tune). We got some pictures and hugs and it was great fun. Dinner was Yankee pot roast and eclairs for dessert.
We are trying to send pictures so hope they make it. I did find my all imports under some file in photos so I will see if I can upload any pictures or if the iPad is getting full. Haven't looked on the setting level yet so will do that soon. Today I remembered a song my mom would sing to me at bed time and I started writing some of these songs down. "Monkey darling", "Danny boy", and one I don't know what the real title but goes "tour rah lure rah lure rah lie". The girls were talking the other night about what they remember their parents or grandparents singing and I took a while to think of one so today at dinner I thought of these and had to write them down. Funny how things come to your mind.
Thanks for all your prayers and thoughts. I means so much to me. Love, Mom/Caroline

Today I was told I would to go to a closing ceremony on
the island of Talaud on the 13th. I will go with the World Hope guy, Andrew,
Danielle Taysom, my commander and one of the older LDS guys in pharmacy. Nice to
get off and see another place. Jen gets to go to the governor's dinner/closing
ceremony on the 14th on the city of Manado. Nice to have a commander that wants
to get the department out.
Thanks for all your prayers and thoughts. I means so much to me. Love, Mom/Caroline
We read this right before church. Thank you for sharing what you talked about and your feelings. It is always good to have a reminder that we are blessed to be so close to church. Like you said sometimes it just becomes the normal scheduled appointment. When we truly are blessed to just walk across the street or around the corner and learn about the Savior and His gospel.
ReplyDeleteWhen we find out what is happening with Steve's interview we will let you know. Thank you for your example of faith and service. We love you! Lisa & Steve
I'm so glad that you can see your talents and abilities getting used, like in the OR and developing films the old fashion way (I loved that picture by the way!) It's amazing how the Lord can utilize us and I know he sent you there for a reason and a purpose, doing things that only you could do.
ReplyDeleteHopefully you can get your pictures saved on on eof your thumb drives so you can continue to take more. We'll have to have a big slide show when you get home. :)
It's interesting how you were talking about recording the songs that your mom used to sing to you. On Memorial Day, we were telling Dad that he needs to write down some of the stories he was telling us about his relatives. I really think it's important to record this information that you have that we don't know or have a chance of forgettig. I would love that as a Christmas gift....just stories and recollections of my ancestors on both sides. Just a thought :)
I love reading your experiences every day. It makes me appreciate the things I do have and so proud dto call you my mom for everything you are doing! I hope today is another great day for you.
